On arrival in Bordeaux you'll be met by a member of the A&K team and driven to Les Sources de Caudalie, your home for the next four nights. Set among the vineyards of Château Smith Haut Lafitte a short dis-tance south of Bordeaux, each of the rooms, suites and stilted cabins is individually designed, most with a bal-cony or terrace overlooking the vineyards or serene lake.

Martillac / Bordeaux Join your expert guide to explore the UNESCO World Heritage city of Bordeaux –a major trading hub since Roman times, centre of English power in medieval Aq-uitaine and remodelled during the boom years of the 18th century. Start at quayside Place de la Bourse, epi-centre of the 18th-century city, and take in highlights including the soaring twin steeples of the Cathedral of Saint André, with its gargoyle-inhabited 15th-century bell tower, and the Palais Rohan, now housing the city hall and fine arts museum. Wander south along the riv-er through the medieval old town to the 15th-century Cailhau Gate and its contemporary the Grosse Cloche ('great bell') set in an imposing twin-turreted gate. Then return north to the Place du Parlement, lined with grand mansions, and magnificent Grand Theatre, built on the site of a Roman temple in 1773 and arguably one of Europe's most opulent. Relish a typical Bordelaise lunch at your host's home, accompanied –naturally –by Bordeaux wine, then return to your hotel to relax and enjoy the facilities. We recommend a treatment at the unique Vinotherapy Spa, where treatments combine warm spring water with vine and grape extracts. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

  • Day3 - 4
Martillac / St Émilion wine region The stone houses of the fortified medieval town of St Émilion tumble down the southern slopes of a vine-blanketed hill overlooking the Dordogne River, just a short drive east of Bordeaux. Discover the story of that eponymous saint, an 8th-century Benedictine hermit whose followers started commercial wine production in the area, delving into the rock-hewn Monolithic Church and the dank grotto in which he reputedly lived. Then it's time to sample the region's bounty –St Émilion's legacy –with wine tastings at nearby vineyards, per-haps Château Franc Mayne or Château La Tour du Pin Figeac. Martillac / Bordeaux / Onward travel Today you'll be driven to Bordeaux airport for your on-ward flight –though if there's no rush to return home, you could instead head south to sample some of Spain's gastronomic highlights on our Culinary Delights of Northern Spain tour. Meals: Breakfast
