Theth and ascent of Jezerca

Product Photo Product Photo Product Photo Product Photo

This journey brings you in Thethi National Park. Thethi village lies in an impressive valley and is a good starting point for hiking and touring the national park. Although remote and isolated for much of the year, the village is known for its warm hospitality. You have the possibility to ascent Jezerca (Jezera), the highest mountain of the Dinaric Alps. Jezerca has a large rocky peak of dolomite limestone and there is no vegetation on it. On the north, east and west of the summit, the mountain slopes down into cirques which were formed from the Ice Age glaciers. Nowadays at an altitude between 1,980 and 2,100 meters, in the northern cirque named "Buni i Jezercës", is a 400 meter long active glacier. Two other smaller active glaciers are located in the eastern cirque "Lugu i Zajeve". In the winter falls lots of snow, which at the little exposed areas melts away only in very dry years

  • Day1
The tour begins immediately upon arrival in Tirana airport around noon. The first stop of the day is Shkodra, one of the oldest inhabited cities in Albania with an over 2400-years old history. After a brief exploration of the city we continue to Theth where dinner and accommodation in a simple but clean guest house are provided. (-/-/D)

  • Day2
The day begins with an introductory walk through the village with the visit of the church and the "Lock-in Tower" (Kulla e ngujimit). Then begins the varied walking towards the gorge of Grunas, which is 30 meters high and one meter wide, and waterfall of Grunas. After a short break we continue our walk up to Ndërlysa. The glacier mills of Ndërlysa offer a unique spectacle of nature: The water of the Black River (Lumi i Zi) squeezes through a narrow approach that has arisen over the millennia. Rounded and sharp rock formations, in the sunlight shimmering colors of water and stone can be observed from both shores. We continue our hike up to the "Blue Eye of Kapreja" (Syri i kaltër i Kapresë), a natural pool with amazing blue water in a jungle-like environment. After a short break, we follow the same path to the guest house. On the way back, we will visit the mill of Kolaj. (B/L/D)

  • Day3
Starting from Thethi we follow the regular walk up-route, which is relatively easy. We take the trail that goes to the right of the river. The path passes over small streams that end on Thethi river, up to the water source "Kroi i Shtrazës" in 930 m altitude, where the pine forest begins. As we approach Peja Pass (Qafa e Pejës) the trail becomes steeper, running through the rocky blocks. From here the trail descends gently eastward to the "Beautiful Hollows" (Gropat e Bukura) where overnight is planned in tents. Gropat e Bukura is a 1700-meter-high field at the foot of Jezerca, ideal for camping. There is potable water, and the shepherds stay there for many days during the summer. It is the ideal starting point for climbing Jezerca and Poplluka summits. (B/L/D).

  • Day4
From the "Beautiful Dips", the trail runs eastwards towards Jezerca. The ascent to the north eastern ridge of Jezerca Peak gets difficult; the terrain becomes more rugged and exposed. With a height of 2694 meters, Jezerca summit dominates all the Albanian Alps and the view from the top is amazing. After a short break we follow the same path to Okol. The vehicles will be waiting here, to drive us to Shkodra where dinner is planned. After dinner drive to Tirana. (B/L/D).
