The crater was formed about 2.5 – 3.0 million years ago after what is believed to be a mountain close to the height of Mt. Kilimanjaro collapsed on itself after an eruption and formed the caldera. More than 25,000 animals live in the crater, including large populations of wildebeests, Thomson’s gazelles, zebras, buffalos, hartebeests and many more.
