Mention Botswana and two things readily spring to mind: outstanding safari and ultimate luxury. These are both delivered with resounding success, but also seemingly with ease, making it the perfect destination for a totally carefree safari. The majority of accommodation on offer in Botswana is tent-based due to strict eco-friendly regulations: if the camps are ever required to move then they leave nothing behind. When we say tents though, we mean rather more of a canvas castle – nothing quite prepares you for stepping into your first safari tent.
A Botswanan safari is diverse in so many ways. The arid, dusty Kalahari plains cover vast swathes of the country, giving way to savannah grasslands, lush green forests and streams in the north while the wending sapphire waters of the Okavango Delta, the world's largest inland delta, are home to a wide array of animals that have all adapted to live in this remarkable landscape. The stark, lunar landscape of the Makgadikgadi Pans is one of the most unique safari experiences on the continent;walk with San bushmen, quad bike over the eerie salt pan, frolic with semi-habituated meerkat, or search for the elusive brown hyena. The Moremi Game Reserve is considered to be one of the best game reserves in the whole of Africa, and once you witness the sheer numbers of wildlife (particularly big cats) here we think you will whole-heartedly agree. Cap this off with a simply spectacular sunset boat cruise on the Chobe River, cruising alongside elephants and hippos and you will leave (if you can) with an overwhelming array of surreal memories.
Botswana with A&K
Now this is an emergency. An A&K emergency. As our guests watched a family of bathing elephants in Botswana’s tannin-hued Okavango Delta they noticed the calm confident guide making a slightly agitated, surreptitious radio call. Were they in danger?
‘No,’ the guide assured them. ‘Everything’s under control.’ He wasn’t bluffing. A few minutes later, a motor launch rounded the river bend and sped towards them, before its driver, with James Bond panache, lobbed a couple of limes to the guide. Crisis averted. Sunset G&T could now be served with ice and a slice.
