Whether searching for polar bears, grizzly bears or the elusive spirit bear, Canada and the USA are the obvious destinations, and never have there been more opportunities to catch sight of the magnificent creatures.

For the definitive polar bear experience we recommend a stay at Seal River Lodge on the Hudson Bay coast, undoubtedly the world's best place to go in search of polar bears; or for a chance to see the ghostly spirit bear, head to the wilds of British Columbia where Spirit Bears roam between September and October.

In order to see the eponymous grizzly bears in their natural habitat, the remote Knight Inlet Lodge is the place to go. The prime viewing time is in August when thousands of pink salmon journey up from the Glendale River to the delight of the grizzlies waiting on the estuary banks.

Spend three days exploring and hiking in Yellowstone National Park, accompanied by a private guide on your first day.

Look out for moose, elk, beaver and black bears with a private guide in Grand Teton National Park.

Visit the National Museum of Wildlife Art in the charming town of Jackson.

Take a float trip down a stretch of the Snake River, that flows through Great Teton National Park, absorbing the spectacular views of the mountains.
